Traffic around Mitchell Road Alexandria has been steadily increasing as development grows in the area. There are two pedestrian crossings on Mitchell near the new Park Sydney development by Greenland Australia which are particularly concerning. I have witnessed how dangerous these pedestrian crossings are. This issue is a matter of public safety. The location of the crossings directly adjacent to a round-about make them extremely dangerous.
The best outcome is for traffic signals at the intersection but this wont happen until the developer finishes the final parts of the development in several years time.
I am pleased that Council shares my concerns and supported my proposal to improve pedestrian safety. At the March Meeting, Council unanimously voted to adopt my motion to improve pedestrian safety on Mitchell Road. Council resolved to look at interim options such as moving the crossing, installing additional signage and traffic calming measures.
I have also asked the Lord Mayor to write to Greenland Australia requesting that the planned traffic signal installation at the Mitchell Road and Maddox Street intersection is to completed ahead of the stage 4 development.
Thank you to John, Natasha and all the other residents who have worked with me to put the proposal to Council.
