It was a pleasure to speak on the Coalition for Conservation 'War on Waste' Panel.
Currently, 8 million tonnes of plastics flow into the oceans each year and 80% is from land based sources flowing through storm water runoff. Without any action, this is expected to increase.
Councils have an important role to play in creating better solutions to waste management and it starts with citizen action.
Councils need to continue to educate citizens about conscious waste disposal, including discouraging the use of single-use plastics and recycling or re-purposing materials to minimise the waste that goes to landfill.
